Liberators Over Europe WWII B-24 Ploesti Raid DVD contains many World War II era films that focus in on the Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber based in the European Theater of Operations. Five films in color and B&W are included.
Film #1 - Liberators Over Europe - This documentary shows lots of footage of 8th Air Force B-24 Liberators in the European Theater both on the ground and in the air. Includes footage of the low-level B-24 raid on the Ploesti oil refineries in Romania where about 55 of the 177 B-24s did not make it back to their base. In spite of these losses, the mission did succeed in sharply reducing the output of these refineries that were producing about a third of Germany's fuel oil. See Col. Leon W. Johnson receive one of the five Medal of Honors awarded for the mission. See the send-off ceremony for the B-24 "Boomerang" which was going home after its overseas duty. Film #2 - The Air Force Story - Ploesti 1944 - This film covers the high-level raid on the Ploesti oil refineries from March to August 1944 by the 8th and 15th Air Forces. Includes great B-24 footage as well as some gun camera footage. Also includes Operation Reunion, the repatriation of airmen shot down over Romania. Run time of 14 min in B+W.
Film #3 - Bombing Ploesti Oil Fields - Rare color film of the Ploesti bombing raid where B-24s fly low over the burning fires below. The only color footage known to exist. Run time of 1 minute in color.
Film #4 - Operation Titanic 1944 - The story of the U.S. shuttle bombing raids over Germany between bases in Great Britain, Italy, and Russia in mid-1944. Run time of 36 minutes in B+W.
Film #5 - AAF Report 1944 - Official USAAF report by General "Hap" Arnold, Commanding General, Army Air Forces, in World War II, showing allies and enemy in action on all fronts. Also shows home front activity. Run time of 42 minutes in B+W.
