Description

As tensions escalated between the nuclear superpowers in the 1950's, the deep sea emerged as a front line in the Cold War. Featured on this DVD are historic films produced during this era, showcasing the U.S. Navy's capabilities as it adapted to meet the Soviet threat.

Watch as a new generation of weapons systems including the Regulus II supersonic cruise missile and the Polaris Fleet Ballistic Missile are developed. See the launching of the USS George Washington, the first of 41 Polaris nuclear subs. See how the rotating "Blue and Gold" crews lived and worked in inner space, and witness the tension as a full-scale tactical launch drill is conducted.

Also included is a film showing post-WWII missile development in the submarine, air and surface fleets. Finally, two rare films (including a crew home movie) show the USS Seadragon as it transits the Northwest Passage underwater. In the Cold War below, even this remote arctic frontier was a battleground.

Digitally remastered and restored from original 16mm and 35mm prints, many of these films have never before been available to the public, Some have only recently been declassified. Please note: because of age and rarity of these films, quality can vary.

Run time is about 105 minutes in B+W and color. Format is NTSC DVD.
