A Brief History of the Cessna 172 Aircraft

The Cessna 172 - also called the Skyhawk - is a multi-purpose civil aircraft manufactured by the Cessna Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kansas. It is a four person fixed tricycle landing gear aircraft that is mainly used for general aviation purposes.

The Cessna 172 is descended from the model 170 which was a taildragger aircraft. The Cessna 172 was first introduced in 1956 and many improvements have been made to the aircraft over the years.

The Cessna 172 uses engines from Continental and Lycoming that produce between 145-180 hp. The cruise speed is about 140 mph with a range of about 800 miles. The airframe is primarily of aluminum construction.

The Cessna 172 is still being manufactured as the 172S Skyhawk SP by Cessna 58 years after its introduction. Approximately 43,000 aircraft have been built during this period. Current models of the Cessna 172 cockpit offer all-glass Garmin primary flight instruments.
