Description
Macau was a Portuguese colony from the 16th century until 1999 at which time it became a special administrative region of China. The former colony is known as the Las Vegas of the Orient due to a large percentage of revenue being derived from gaming, tourism, and hospitality industries.
The Macau International Airport was built in the early 1990s. The airport's runway is built on a strip of reclaimed land off the coast of Macau. About 6 million passengers can be handled annually.
