Description

Wings over Hong Kong is a history of aviation in Hong Kong from 1891-1998 and is a tribute to the Kai Tak International Airport. The DVD has five chapters:

  • Introduction and Early Days
  • China Clipper
  • Post-War and Cathay Pacific Airways
  • The Jet Era and the new Kai Tak
  • Modern Kai Tak and The Future

Kai Tak International Airport in Hong Kong is like no other in the world. During their final approach, massive 747 jumbo airliners have to bank 47 degrees, avoiding large mountains in order to land on what has been described as a postage stamp. Experience this landing from the cockpit of a jumbo airliner. A quote from the DVD describing landings at Kai Tak: The first time is hair raising - every time is breathtaking.

The early pre-war days of Kai Tak are covered with shots of Sunderland flying boats and Pam Am China Clippers. Then post-war aviation with Douglas C-47s and other aircraft of the era. The growth of Kai Tak is chronicled from a airstrip reclaimed from the sea to an audacious runway protruding 8000 feet into the sea.

With the closing of Kai Tak Airport in 1998 and the opening of Chek Lap Kok, the program is the ultimate tribute to aviation in Hong Kong.

In NTSC DVD format with runtime of about 50 minutes. ">
