The war against Japan was waged not merely at sea, but in the skies of the Pacific. The U.S. Navy's carrier-based planes bombed and strafed enemy ships and shore bases, and also supported amphibious landings. They served as the vanguard of the advance, a fact recognized early on by the commanders: the loss of a single carrier could change the complexion of the war.

Featured on this DVD are four rare films made by and for the Navy. They include "Life and Death of the USS Hornet", profiling the carrier which struck Japan in 1942 and fought at Midway, but was sunk a short time later at Santa Cruz. Also featured is "The Fighting Lady", a stunning color film about the Essex-class USS Yorktown, "Brought to Action" showing the victory at Leyte, and a short about the assault on Truk in 1944.
